Sultan Alp Arslan (the Lion-Hearted), who defeated the Byzantine army and opened the gates of Anatolia to Turks in 1071, is known for his heroism and battle tactics, according to Turkish history.

On April 27, 1064, Arslan became the second ruler of the Great Seljuk Empire.

His victory on the plain of Manzikert (Malazgirt), now Mus in eastern Turkey, on August 26, 1071, intensified the Byzantine Empire's decline and led to more Turks settling in the area, paving the way for the Ottoman Empire and the contemporary Republic of Turkey.

According to Mustafa Alican, a mediaeval history expert at Mus Alparslan University, Arslan was the greatest sovereign in Seljuk Turkish history.

"The Battle of Manzikert was a defensive conflict in which the Seljuk Turks sought to defend themselves and the Islamic world from the Byzantines," he continued.

"For the first time in history, Sultan Alp Arslan won a huge battle on the plain of Manzikert and captured a Byzantine Emperor, Romanus IV Diogenes," Alican claimed.

Arslan was a unique commander battling for the unity of the Islamic world, according to Rahmi Tekin, a history professor at Van Yuzuncu Yil University.

With his statesmanship and rapid decision-making, he noted, Arslan was one of the most important figures in history.
